Bulls top at €4800 at Simmental Premier Show & Sale

The Simmental Premier Sale at Roscommon on Saturday last followed the recent trend in pedigree sales which are recording lower clearance rates than 2013 but on a positive note demand for the top quality lots remained strong.

The Senior Bull Champion ‘Clonagh Denis The Menace’ was exhibited by Garrett Behan, Ballyfin, and Portlaoise and sold for joint top price of €4800 to David Birmingham, Kilteely, Co. Limerick. Born in September `12 this bull was sired by “Clonagh Wonderboy” and out of a “Sacombe Wishfull Thinking” dam “Hillcrest Jacqueline”.

Also hitting the €4800 mark was Lot 3 ‘Clonguish Daryl’ for Joe & Sean McGarry, Newtownforbes, Co. Longford. Sired by “Richardstown Jumbo” and out of “Brogeen Victoria” by “Raceview King” this bull which stood third in his class was purchased by Eamon McCloskey, Kilrea, Co. Derry.

Selling at €4500 was ‘Broomfield Elmo’ the Junior Champion Bull exhibited by Paul McArdle, Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan. This “Banwy T-Rex” sired bull which is out of a “Milton Lord Tiffany” dam “Brookwood Wee Della” was purchased by Scottish breeder Neil Barclay from Aberdeenshire to join his Hairstone Herd.

The Reserve Senior Champion was exhibited by Raymond Bracken, Tullamore. Co. Offaly. ‘Cruithill Daingeal’ was sired by “Curaheen Wakeman” and out of “Cruithill Adele” by “Cruithill Volcano”. John Fleming, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon was the buyer at €2300.

The Reserve Junior Champion ‘Clonagh Eye Of The Tiger’ was sired by “Clonagh Tiger Gallant” and out of the “Banwy T-Rex” dam “Clonagh Absolutely Fabulous”. Exhibited by Garrett Behan this February `13 born bull remained unsold having not reached his reserve.

€3600 to Gordon Salter, Dunmanway, Co. Cork for ‘Mohona Dandy’ sired by “Curaheen Apostle” purchased by Richard Rogers, Portglenone, Co. Antrim.

€3200 to Joe & Sean McGarry for ‘Clonguish Emperor’ a “Kilbride Farm Newry” sired bull from H.A. & W.S. Stronach, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

€3100 to Ray Bracken for a “Curaheen Apostle” sired bull ‘Cruithill Dancer’ selling to Gavin Hayes, Lisburn, Co. Antrim.

€3000 to Billy Connell, Athlone, Co. Westmeath for a “Curaheen Tyson” sired bull ‘Glynwood Echo’ from Brian Brady Ballinamuck, Co. Longford.

€2900 for ‘Towerhill Denny’ exhibited by Seamus Aherne, Cappamore, Co. Limerick. This “Celtic Benny” sired bull was purchased by Joe Began, Smithboro, Co. Monaghan.

€2800 to Garrett Behan, for a “Banwy T-Rex” sired bull ‘Clonagh Demolition Rex’ from Moira Lavin, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon.

The overall clearance rate of just under 50% was disappointing but on a positive note a greater number of bulls changed hands than at the same sale in 2013 but with an average price of €2800 which is down €290 on last year reflecting the current confidence in the beef sector.

In the female section a double of Champion and Reserve went to the Neenan Brothers, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo with two full sisters ‘Fearna Devine Vienna’ & ‘Fearna Duchess ET’. Sired by “Herkules” these heifers are out of the “Raceview King” dam “Fearna Vienna”. The Champion remained unsold while the Reserve Champion was purchased by Neil Barclay, Aberdeenshire, Scotland at €5000.

€3250 to James & David Wall, Newcastle, Co. Dublin for a “Curaheen Warrior” daughter ‘Auroch Desira’ purchased by John Tuohy, Whitegate, Co. Clare.

€2500 to Garrett Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise for ‘Clonagh Dotty Brumble’ by “Banwy T-Rex” selling to Richard Pettit, Banffshire, Scotland.

€2500 again to Garrett Behan for ‘Clonagh Dolly Bank’ by “Banwy T-Rex” purchased by JJ & JM Sanders, Northumberland, England.

€2500 to Gordon Salter, Dunmanway, Co. Cork for “Drumlone Anchor” heifer ‘Mohona Edith’ selling to John Moore, Omagh, Co. Tyrone.

A clearance rate of 60% was recorded in the female section with an average price of €2170.
